It's the mashup you didn't know you needed.
The allure of the bob never fades, and with each variation comes a new wave of FOMO for those who aren’t currently sporting the look. Micro and Parisian styles have ruled the internet for a bit, but the latest bob remix is sure to become one of the most desired. Enter the butterfly bob. Yes, you heard right.
The style blends two beloved looks—a classic bob and the butterfly cut—and is turning heads (as expected) everywhere it’s spotted. Ahead, we chatted with three stylists to get the full rundown on this chic new bob trend.

What is the butterfly bob?
The beauty of the butterfly bob is that it embraces both modern and traditional elements of the classic cut. Hairstylist Dayonna Worell explains that, like a typical bob, it has added volume and texture. “However, instead of sleek and simple, the butterfly bob uses layers and waves to create a more dynamic and playful look,” she says. Another key takeaway from this variation is its versatility. The combination of mid-length strands and tousled layers makes the butterfly bob much more relaxed compared to the standard bob cut. “Think textured layers that resemble butterfly wings and have a whimsical, carefree appearance,” says Alterna Haircare education manager Paul Wintner.
Where other bobs thrive on sharp, bluntly cut ends, the butterfly bob takes a more laid back approach. “It combines the ease of the butterfly cut with the sophistication of the bob, resulting in a style that has movement and body,” says Wintner. Hairstylist Geneva adds that the look usually features face-framing layers and fringy bangs that help enhance the shape and style of the cut. The pros agree that bangs are a key element of the butterfly bob. Whether you choose a curtain style or a long sweeping fringe, your bangs will be pivotal in creating that free-flowing look.

Who does the butterfly bob work for?
“The butterfly bob is one of the most diverse types of bobs because it can be customized to fit most face shapes,” says Geneva. Even more compelling is that it works well with several hair textures and types. “The butterfly cut is characterized by its textured layers that make it adaptable for different textures,” says Wintner. For those with wavy hair or natural curls, he says the cut offers an effortless and playful look that requires minimal styling time.
What should you ask for at the salon?
Remember, this look is all about creating movement with layers. But that can be tricky with a shorter-length hairstyle. “Ask for a mid-neck length bob with layers that fall right under the chin when curled,” says Geneva. The pro notes that it’s important to work with your stylist to help you figure out the best face-framing layers for your face shape. The layers should also add definition to the style. In that vein, Worell recommends requesting textured layers throughout your cut. Wintner adds that these types of layers not only help enhance the natural flow of the bob but are necessary for creating a defined shape for thicker hair textures.

How do you style the butterfly bob?
Styling your butterfly bob should be pretty simple thanks to its floaty layers. Still, it helps to have a few tricks up your sleeve to create the look. “Blow drying with a round brush and lifting at the roots will add a natural volume at the crown and bounce to your overall style,” says Worell. You can also use a styling cream or mouse to add texture. If you’re going this route, Wintner notes that using a diffuser and a curling iron can be helpful. “The diffuser tames your natural texture while a curling wand adds soft waves to enhance the style,” he says. In short, it’s best to keep it simple and playful. “This cut is extremely versatile, meaning you could opt for a classic blowout, messy beachy waves or even go for a vintage style with a nice soft flip,” says Geneva.
