Sometimes, all that stands between you and your next great haircut is the right reference photo. You might believe you want a bob, but then you see a mid-length cut styled with a flip. Suddenly, you realize that you’re really craving that shape. Alternatively, you may consider keeping your hair long. However, upon seeing a photo of a grown-out pixie cut, you might feel inspired to make a bigger chop. Suffice it to say, visual references are everything.

In preparation for spring, we consulted top hairstylists—along with their mood boards and Instagram feeds—to compile the seven top haircuts that feel fresh for spring 2025. If ease and versatility are at the top of your list, you may just find your next great haircut.

1. Vacation Hair: The Trend to Embrace

This spring, consider what hairstylist Eric Vaughn refers to as the “reverse of a haircut.” It’s all about emphasizing length without adding external layers or face-framing pieces. To achieve the look of “vacation hair,” styling plays a crucial role.

“You have definition, but it’s not too defined,” explains London-based hairstylist Luke Castillo. “Think of waves that look like you’ve just returned from traveling for months.” Setting clips can help create a defined, yet soft, hairline crimp, as illustrated by hairstylist Ricky Fraser on Charlotte Lawrence. This particular style, if you can call it that, lacks layers. Instead, the subtle bends contribute to texture and movement.

2. ‘90s Grown-Out Pixie: A Bold Choice

While some people are growing their hair long in a nod to the ‘70s, others are embracing shorter styles with a big chop. Castillo explains, “This look involves taking a client from longer hair to a shorter shape—be it a rounded bob, a more '90s grown-out pixie, or a classic pixie.” The ‘90s grown-out pixie, often called a "bixie," is particularly trendy today—a hybrid between a shag cut and a pixie. Isabela Merced is the muse for this striking look.

3. Side-Parted Bob: Classic with a Twist

Every hairstylist agrees that the bob is a classic shape. Yet, styling variations change each season. This spring, the focus is on a bob with a side part. “The more volume, the better,” says Vaughn. When styling your bob at home, you can use hot rollers or a blow-dry brush to create root volume before parting your hair to the side. This style is low-commitment yet high-impact.

4. Blowout Layers: Volume is Key

Instead of opting for your average long, layered haircut, consider asking for long “blowout” layers at your spring appointment. This will clearly signal to your stylist the desired effect: lots of bouncy volume. “Long blowout layers have become very popular, especially with the comeback of velcro rollers,” explains Vaughn.

“This haircut allows clients to maintain their length while adding body, volume, and bounce.” Pro tip: Before blowing out your hair and setting it in rollers, apply a heat protectant. Vaughn recommends the amika Superfruit Star Lightweight Hair Styling Oil to prevent breakage and enhance shine.

5. Butterfly Bangs: Soft and Chic

An evolution of the butterfly haircut, butterfly bangs focus on how the front layers fall back when the hair is tied up. Castillo explains, “The bangs hug the face whether the hair is down or pulled back.” This cut provides stunning softness, especially for finer hair, but works beautifully with curly textures as well. The length of the hair doesn't matter much; it's all about how the front pieces are styled.

6. The “Modern Hollywood” Cut: Detail-Oriented Style

The “Modern Hollywood” haircut showcases attention to detail. This style features a tiny bang that isn’t straight across; it's more of a curtain bang. It’s long enough to be tucked behind the ear or curled to create soft waves. This classic yet modern aesthetic is perfectly exemplified by Cindy Kimberly. Castillo notes, “This style is versatile for all hair types, allowing you to have fun with your hair in its natural state or with a perfect blowout.”

7. Bi-Layer Flip: A Playful Touch

If you’ve seen the “jellyfish haircut”—which is half-short, half-long, sporting layers that resemble jellyfish tentacles—this style is a gentler version. It features just one external layer that extends from the ends. Hairstylist Owen Gould offers a masterclass in styling; both layers and ends are flipped out effortlessly. To replicate the flip-out at home, utilize a round brush or flatiron to smooth the hair and curve the ends upward.
