Slip bangs are summer's coolest face-framing fringe and this is *exactly* what to ask your hairdress

Meet the subtle cousin of the 70s curtain fringe.

Will we ever get enough of fringes? Nope, sorry. And the latest easy-to-maintain fringe style comes in the form of the slip bang. Way easier to style than a normal fringe, less full than a 70s curtain fringe, the slip bang looks like it's set to be summer's cool-girl hairstyle and hairdresser's have been inundated with requests, with celebs like JLo and Camila Cabello showing us how to nail it.

Callum Standen-May, co-owner of Standemay and creative stylist at Bond Shoreditch told GLAMOUR: The beauty of split bangs is that they are a lot less maintenance than a regular fringe and require minimal upkeep."

Slip bangs are like the more subtle cousin of the 70s curtain fringe. While the curtain fringe is often fuller and swishy, slip bangs are more low-key and wispy and almost peeking through your hairstyle rather than being anything too obvious.

How to style slip bangs

So, how are you supposed to style your slip bangs? Callum says: "You simply use a round brush and hairdryer with the nozzle pointing downwards to dry your bangs straight and keep them smooth and free from frizz. If you want to give them further smoothness and shine, you can go over them with heated styling irons and can then finish with a smoothing oil to give them a more polished appearance. However, equally, split bangs look great when left to air dry if you prefer a more natural, ‘I woke up like this’ style", he adds.

"You can also spritz in some texture spray or mousse into damp hair before allowing to air dry and scrunch this in with your fingers for a messier take on the trend."

Worried about those bangs getting greasy? Callum suggests having dry shampoo on standby (don't we always?) "A dry shampoo is a perfect product for absorbing the excess oils and refreshing your bangs between washes. It also provide some volume, which looks great with this style. As your bangs grow out they will also look beautiful and seamlessly blend into your hair."

"I love the cool girl, 70s vibe this hair trend gives off and that the style is so versatile – you can wear your hair down and super straight and sleek or more effortless and natural. Wearing your hair up with split bangs also looks incredibly chic, particularly when your bangs are paired with a ponytail or loose bun," Callum says.

This fringe trend is also a match made in heaven for anyone with colour. "Having your split bangs coloured lighter for the summer season is a great way to give your hair a sun=kissed look and to further frame your face and allow your features, particularly your eyes, to really pop."

What to ask your hairdresser

"When it comes to asking your hairdresser for split bangs, ask them for the perfect style to suit your face shape," suggests Callum.

"For those with round face shapes they should opt for their bangs to be thinner and wispier in appearance to soften and balance their features."

"Heart face shapes will want a similar look to this, as blunt bangs will accentuate their jaw line.

"For square face shapes this trend looks great worn shorter, allowing the bangs to give the illusion of an elongated face.

"Oval face shapes can pull of any look of bangs, however, heavier blunt bangs look particularly gorgeous on this face shape.

"In general, if you have a longer shaped forehead you will want to choose bangs longer in length to balance this and if you have a shorter forehead, a shorter style of bangs is a great choice to create the appearance of a more elongated forehead."
