From Jane Birkin’s famous bangs to Audrey Tautou’s crop, there is something infinitely cool about French hair. Our friends across the Channel know how to bring an undone touch to their looks – even when fresh out of the salon, their hair seems to fall into apparently un-styled (yet still parfait) shape. While a certain level of polish is undoubtedly a must – no unkempt styles here – the aim is always an artfully lived-in finish. And looking so effortless takes more time than you might imagine.
So, what are the haircuts and styles making French women tick right now? Here, Vogue takes a look at the popular styles for summer and beyond.
The Parisian crop
If there’s one cut to keep an eye on right now, it’s the crop. Not only did Taylor Russell just get a particularly cute elfin style cut in, but the French girlies are also fans. See Yevgeniya Topyer-Krist’s simple crop, Léa Seydoux’s super-short style from 2021, or say it with braids, like Fatou N’Diaye, below.
Loose curtain bangs
There’s nothing more French than a mid-to-long style – full of natural, free-flowing texture – topped off with some loose curtain bangs. Cut to sweep back into the rest of the hair, this ’70s-inspired face-framing detail is low-maintenance but gives shape and body to the haircut, making a subtle statement. See Sabina Socol and Leia Sfez for inspiration.
The scrunchie
How to keep your hair up and out of your face, whatever your cut? According to Anne Laure Mais, it’s all about the ruffled scrunchie. One of this year’s hottest hair accessories, retro embroidered, laced and patterned scrunchies are the perfect partner to slicked-back styles, which come into their own as the temperatures rise. Bounteous curls
When it comes to French hair it’s all about leaning into – and enhancing – what’s naturally there, so curls are always a good idea. Whether you have 2A or 4C curls, ensure hair is optimally moisturised for a style that looks as healthy as it feels – see Lena Mahfouf and Hanna Lhoumeau. For definition, bounce and hydration, scrunch a product like Sam McKnight’s Cool Curls Mist through mid-lengths and ends.
Undone volume
Sometimes it’s less about the cut and more about the way hair has been styled. French hair always seems to look like it’s had a hand casually run through it, falling naturally to one side with ample volume and movement – but how? While some are simply a result of excellent genetics, body, volume and gritty texture can also be created by way of product. One of the best on the market is Hershesons’s Zhoosh.
Bob and bangs
This year, bobs have gotten longer and looser – and no one is doing it better than Jeanne Damas, whose collarbone-grazing style takes its cues from the layers and texture of a shag haircut. It’s cool-girl hair at its finest, and you can add in a curtain fringe for bonus points. Meanwhile Lena Simonne’s mussed-up style – in a burnished copper hue – is another big hit.
