5 Notable ’90s Hairstyles That Still Turn Heads Today

It’s impossible to talk about most of the iconic haircuts from the ’90s without mentioning the supermodels of that decade. The women who dominated the catwalks back then need no introduction beyond their first names—Christy, Naomi, Linda, and Cindy. On and off the runways, they set trends with all kinds of textures and lengths, and an era of crimped hair and fussy perms gave way to shiny, blow-dried manes.

Here we take a look at the haircuts that marked a generation and might just provide some new season inspiration for you too.

The ‘90s hairstyles that are trending again in 2024

Boho curls

Naomi Campbell has tried many different hairstyles over the years, but while many will immediately think of her sleek, straight locks, it’s the boho curls she wore at the premiere of Cookie’s Fortune in 1999 that we’ll always remember. A straight cut with relaxed curls was the perfect partner to warm highlights, which brought out Campbell’s supermodel features.

Straight bob

One of the first images that comes to mind when I think of Christy Turlington is a 1989 Vogue Italia shoot with Steven Meisel and Oribe Canales, who styled her hair. She has the same haircut in the photograph above. There’s something irresistible about this straight, glossy cut—it’s seductive with a feminine touch, plus I love the curled bouncy ends.

Long bob

Mexican actor Salma Hayek often sported the ultra-straight hair that marked this era. In the ’90s she would frequently walk the red carpet with a long bob, which is an ideal mid-length alternative to a shorter cut. A glossy finish is key to pulling off the look, so load up on hair oil and adorn with barrettes to further nail the ’90s look.

A layered mid-length cut

Cindy Crawford is the master of pulling off voluminous hairstyles. The secret is a layered haircut, which helps the hair move. A good blow dryer helps inject volume from root to tip.

Pixie cut

With a face like Linda Evangelista’s, there’s no hairstyle or color that won’t look perfect. She’s tried them all—platinum mid-length, long and brown, and a famous red pixie cut. It’s that last hairstyle that really helped Evangelista make her name—she even claimed it helped her “quadruple” her fee.
