Stylists share their fave layered cuts.
Adding layers to a cropped hairstyle is one of the quickest ways to take a cut from ho-hum to head-turning. They’re the difference between a flat, predictable style and one that delivers both styling versatility and lots of movement. Think tousled shags, bold pixies, and texture-rich lobs. Toying with ideas for your next big cut? We asked celebrity stylists to share their favorite short layered hairstyle ideas so you know exactly what to ask for in the salon chair. These textured cuts will have you booking that appointment stat.
1. Classic Pixie
The pixie is an iconic mainstay defined by its ultra-cropped look with textured layers, tapered sides, and slightly longer hair on the top. “This style is typically worn by a woman with a certain level of confidence and sophistication about herself,” says Alexis Flagler, hairstylist and educator. “This style varies in level of maintenance, depending on the hair type and texture and the color, with colored or more textured hair requiring more maintenance.”
2. Textured Blunt Cut Bob
A textured blunt cut bob balances clean, blunt edges with a hint of layered texture for a bit of movement and volume. “This combination is a great option for those looking to balance strong jawlines or cheekbones,” notes Joey Scandizzo, celebrity stylist and co-creative director of Eleven Australia. “This look has been popular amongst my clients this year and I believe it's due to its versatility—it looks amazing on almost anyone.”
3. The Beachy Lob
True to its name, the beachy lob has that sort of salty, just-spent-hours-on-the-shoreline effortlessness to it. Celebrity hairstylist Vivienne Somers says that this layered short hairstyle is a great way to boost volume for those with thin to medium hair, and notes that it’s super easy to style if you already have a natural wave to your hair. “Just add some styling foam to thicken and define it,” she says. “Fine hair can achieve a lot of volume with product and a combined hit of air with your hairdryer. This style is fast and easy and can often be a shake, scrunch, and go.”
4. Heavy Layers with Wispy Bangs
The contrast of heavy layers with sweet, wispy bangs makes for a gorgeous short layered hairstyle. “I love this look for those that want volume with little hair,” says Katelyn Ellsworth, hairstylist and founder of The Roslyn. “This style creates an illusion of fullness with fun layers.” She adds that blow-drying your bangs is key to styling the look every day.
5. Slicked Back Blunt Cut with Flippy Ends
There are many reasons to love this hairstyle–it’s elegant, edgy, playful, gives a hint of retro flare, and complements facial features and cheekbones. “It’s a fashion-forward look, and ideal for those with naturally straight or slightly wavy hair. But anyone bold enough with the proper tools could pull it off,” Scandizzo says.
The key, of course, is styling it for the wet, slicked-back look. Starting with damp hair, smooth the hair away from the face, and coat with a medium-hold styling product. Blow-dry while using a flat brush. To add flippy ends, use a round brush.
6. The Short Shag
The shag has remained a trendy cut for the last five years and it’s showing no signs of tapering off. Synonymous with casual style and undeniably cool, the shag is a go-to choice for anyone looking to add texture, volume, and a touch of edge to their look.” The short shag works best with a great cut paired with lots of layers, and this style is very flattering for thicker hair,” Somers says. “Adding highlights brings the appearance of more dimension.”
7. Layered French Bob
The French bob is really enjoying a moment in the spotlight right now, and it’s obvious why. It’s versatile, super chic, and still gives you some hair to run your fingers through. “I love this look for those who want simplicity and a style that’s easy to maintain,” Ellsworth says. She adds that getting trims often helps with styling, and notes that the longer the bob, the trickier it is to style.
8. Old Money Bob
Inspired by vintage icons like Marilyn Monroe, the old money bob is the perfect short layered hairstyle for those who want volume and glamour. “This style features a chin-length cut with moderate layers for volume and face framing and soft curls,” Flagler says.
9. Lob with Deep Side Part
Did you hear that? The side part has made its way back into good graces, and it’s a great way to add some dimension to a textured lob. “This is universally flattering but is especially beautiful on those with oval, heart, or square face shapes,” Scandizzo says. “I love this look because it balances facial features, elongates the neck, and the side part adds asymmetry. Plus, it offers plenty of styling options—you can wear it sleek, wavy, or curled.”
10. Baby-Soft Layers with Wispy Bangs
Baby soft layers are a subtle, graduated approach to layers that works on every length, from pixie cut to long lob. “This style is best for face framing with wispy bangs without being too heavy,” Ellsworth says. “The baby soft layers help add movement. I recommend blow-drying to style and scheduling regular trim visits.”
